On arriving at Schipol Airport we picked up our rental car and drove past the City of Amsterdam, over the 18 mile dike that keeps out the sea, and on to Leeuwarden in Friesland.

The Afdluitdijk, or Barrier Dam  connects Noord Holland to Friesland.  It separates the Wadden Sea from Lake IJsselmeer, a large freshwater lake.  A series of islands called the Wadden Islands is all that separates the Wadden Sea from the North Atlantic in this area.

This old bell tower started leaning before it was completed so it was never finished.

We arrived on Easter Sunday and everything was closed till Tuesday. So no traffic or crowds for 2 days.
